According to Mike, music is his lifelong passion. Since the '80s Mike has worked as a performing and recording artist. His greatest happiness is working with young people, and currently is a Vocal Music Teacher at Century Community Charter School. As a teacher/musical director/director, Mike lives to empower students by bringing them not just to a greater knowledge and application of their craft, but also to a realization of the joy that comes along with knowing that a truly inspired performance can transform lives. Mike is also an actor, and proud member of SAG/AFTRA.
Luke Yankee (yes, it’s his real name) has written, directed, produced, taught, lectured and acted throughout the country and abroad. He has run two regional theatres, serving as Producing Artistic Director of the Long Beach Civic Light Opera (one of the largest musical theatres in America) and the Struthers Library theatre, a historic landmark in northwestern Pennsylvania. He has worked on Broadway and Off. His book, Just Outside The Spotlight: Growing Up With Eileen Heckart, which was by critics as “One of the most compassionate, illuminating showbiz books ever written.” He has worked with some of the best in the business including: Morgan Fairchild, Cynthia Nixon, David Canary, Ben Vareen, Sir Rex Harrison, Tony Roberts, Peter Falk, Barbara Eden, Edward Asner, Gwyneth Paltrow, Blythe Danner, Christopher Reeve and Celeste Holm to name a few.
POPs SUMMER SHOW: POPs is thrilled to be presenting Seussical at the Centinela Valley Performing Arts Center. This program will offer students ages 8-17 a unique opportunity to have an in-depth theatrical experience. In 5 weeks, they will put on a full scale musical and perform at a one of the best state of the art theatrical venues in the South Bay. This is truly an opportunity for young performers to hone their skills in acting, singing, dancing and character work while enjoying a summer experience unlike any other.
Now one of the most performed shows in America, Seussical is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! Join us as students will lovingly bring to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie and a little boy with a big imagination – Jojo. The colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos.
Don Hill has worked in the professional theatre as an actor, stage manager, production manager, director, producer and union negotiator in a thirty-two year career spanning both coasts. As an actor, he attended Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. As a directing student at USC he was mentored by the late John Houseman, who chaired his master's thesis, Find Your Way Home. Hill served as production stage manager for the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra under the artistic direction of Gerard Schwarz working with such luminaries as Patti Lupone and Leontyne Price. As resident production stage manager for the Los Angeles Actors' Theatre (LAAT), he stage managed twelve productions. As Associate Producer for the Long Beach Civic Light Opera, Mr. Hill worked with such celebrities as Carol Burnett, Bebe Neuwirth and Elaine Stritch. The highlight of Mr. Hill’s experience at the LBCLO was creating (with Tony Award wining producer Barry Brown), the legendary presentation of COMPANY IN CONCERT, with the original Broadway Cast at Lincoln Center.
A dance instructor and choreographer for over 20 years, Hazel has a BA in dance from San Jose State University and has choreographed and directed over 25 musicals with POPs since its inception in 2007. Community and Youth Theater recent credits include Legally Blonde, Beauty and the Beast, Chicago, Peter Pan and Oliver. Regional theater credits include LA Times Critic’s Choice Award Winner A Chorus Line, Sheila Callaghan’s Elevada, (Chance Theater, Anaheim) and Opus 3 Artists’ Musical Thrones: A Parody of Ice and Fire National Tour. Founder and Artistic Director of Kairos Dance Company (est. 2006), modern choreography credits include Palm Desert Dance Under the Stars Choreography Festival (finalist), Rocky Mountain Choreography Festival (winner), sjDANCEco ChoreoFest (winner). 2018 performances include Awakenings and Beginnings Dance Festival, Pasadena Dance Festival, and Kairos’ full-length show, Paradigm at Tim Robbins’ Actor’s Gang in Culver City. hazelclarkedances.com
